The Girl Who Fell from the sky by Heidi W. Durrow

In the book The Girl Who fell from the sky the author is Heidi W. Durrow. In the story it is about a biracial girl who has to deal with everyone misjudging her and assuming the worst about her because her mom was white and father was black. In the story her mom gets injured and no one can find her so their family splits up because the father went to war and so she is left to live with her grandma and where her grandma lives your either white or black. In the story there was a young kid who lived on the bottom of Rachel’s family who saw everything happen he saw everyone falling down falling apart. Which cause their family death except for the husband and Rachel because her mother protected Rachel from getting a lot of damage.

The main protagonist in my book is Rachel but there is a chapter in the book where it is from different perspectives that connect to Rachel’s life. Her mom is Danish and her father was African American. Her mom suicides herself on top of the roof because she couldn’t deal with the pain that her husband called her kids mean words which meant black also she had a kid with another man before who died in a fire. My character Rachel does not what side she wants to have she wants to have her mom’s Danish but also wants her dad to be part of her. Rachel does not know why everyone hates her because in the story when she goes to school everyone told her she was white even though her skin was black and they would not stop reminding her that she was white. Rachel did not know why they didn’t accept her as black. Throughout the book Rachel goes through a lot of emotions because she thinks that other people will help and give her the answers but she realizes that you have to figure out your life by yourself.

            The thing that influences Rachel is her mother because Rachel wants to be good and do good things because her mother wanted her kids to be good and do well in school. In the story I also think that her mom can also be a bad influence because instead of facing her problems and helping her kids confront the world she ran away from it and killed herself and her two kids. In the story the one that gives Rachel the best influences are Drew and her Aunt Loretta because she was trying to help Rachel figure out who she wanted to be and they would always give her advice on what she should do. The person that I think that did not help Rachel was her Grandma because her grandma always ordered her to do stuff. She did not want her to go down the wrong path but that made Rachel sure that she was going the wrong path because if she wasn’t her grandmother wouldn’t yell at her.

           I think that Lakeisha and Rachel’s relationship evolved because in the beginning she also assumed that she was a white girl. But as the story goes along she starts to figure out that there is a lot more to Rachel than everyone thinks because she’s been through a lot and still she’s strong and ignores the bullies that try to bully her. Their relationship also evolved because in the story Lakeisha and Rachel get so close that they do things together and they tell each other secrets. Also I think that their relationship got so close that they respected each other and they wanted each other to be respectful about what they each thought and wanted to do.     

 All in all I think that this book thought me a lot because it thought me to be strong because they're will always be a person who is going to say something about what you do or what you want to do. It teaches the readers that everyone goes through a tough time and that everyone tries to figure out who they really are.It also teaches the reader that we have to respect everyone because everyone makes their own decisions and sometimes it will make you happy and sometimes it will not but you have to deal with it.
